Many breeds of dogs and cats have longer fur which may preclude you from viewing a wound. If you are having a hard time seeing the wound, cut the fur away with scissors. If the wound is on your pet's foot pad or is a minor wound, wash it with saline or soapy water.
Bites (Punctures): Take immediately to the veterinarian. The risk of infection and possibility of further internal damage is high. If bleeding is severe, apply direct pressure with gauze en route.
Cuts (Lacerations): Flush the area with warm water and apply direct pressure with gauze. Take your pet to the veterinarian.
Scratches & Scrapes (Abrasions): Remove hair around the wound, flush with warm water and apply pressure with gauze if bleeding persists. Take your pet to the veterinarian.
Skin Tears (Avulsions): Flush the area with warm water and apply pressure with gauze if bleeding persists. Take your pet to the veterinarian.
