CPR First Aid online courses can be beneficial when having to learn basic lifesaving skills such as First Aid for severe bleeding. First Aid certification online classes teach you the different types of bleeding and how to treat them effectively to help save a life and/or keep a victim stable until emergency help arrives.

There are three types of external bleeding. Capillary bleeding, venous bleeding, and arterial bleeding are the different types of bleeding that are taught about when learning First Aid. Capillary bleeding is the most common type of bleeding and is the most minor type of bleeding you can have. With capillary bleeding, blood vessels are able to clot on their own and the bleeding will stop without having to administer First Aid. An example of capillary bleeding would be if a child was running at the park and fell down and scraped their knee. The knee would be scraped and have blood slowly oozing from the wound. Cleaning up the wound and covering it with a bandage to prevent infection would be all the First Aid needed.

Venous bleeding happens when the vein becomes damaged and the blood flows steadily. An example of venous bleeding would be if you are using a knife to prepare food in the kitchen and accidently cut your finger. In most cases of venous bleeding, applying pressure with a towel or cloth would be enough for the blood to start clotting and cause the bleeding to stop. However, if the bleeding does not stop, a visit to a medical facility would be an appropriate next step.

Arterial bleeding is the most severe type of bleeding. With arterial bleeding, a large, major vein has been damaged and blood flow could be gushing or pulsing out of the body quickly. An example of arterial bleeding could be a machinery or car accident where a limb receives a deep cut and/or is crushed. With bleeding as severe as arterial bleeding, a tourniquet must be used to try to stop the bleeding. Tourniquets are tight bands that are used to completely stop the flow of blood from a wound. Tourniquets are used in life and death situations to prevent a victim from bleeding out. Knowing how to use a tourniquet correctly can save a life and keep someone stable until emergency medical help arrives.
