How To Do The Heimlich Maneuver?

1. Assess the Situation:

  • Before taking action, quickly assess the situation. Look for signs that the person is choking, such as them clutching their throat or an inability to speak or breathe.

2. Request Consent:

  • If the person is conscious, approach them calmly and ask, "Are you choking? Can I help you?" Gaining consent is essential before proceeding.

3. Position Yourself:

  • Stand behind the choking person, ensuring they are in an upright position.

4. Hand Placement:

  • Make a fist with one hand and place the thumb side against the middle of the person's abdomen, just above the navel.

5. Grasp with the Other Hand:

  • With your other hand, grasp your fist and ensure it's well-anchored.

6. Abdominal Thrusts:

  • Perform quick, upward thrusts with your hands and fist, using your upper body strength. The goal is to force air from the person's lungs to dislodge the obstructing object.
  • Use a strong, upward motion as if you were trying to lift the person off the ground.

Variation 1: The "Five-and-Five" Approach

  • Some experts suggest an alternative method called the "Five-and-Five" approach, especially for infants and pregnant individuals.
  • Instead of abdominal thrusts, deliver five quick blows to the person's back between their shoulder blades using the heel of your hand. Follow this with five abdominal thrusts. Repeat if necessary.

7. Monitor the Person:

  • After each thrust or back blow, check if the object has been expelled. Look for signs of breathing or coughing.
  • If the person becomes unconscious, start CPR immediately and follow emergency protocols.

8. Seek Medical Help:

  • Even if the person appears to have expelled the obstruction, seek medical attention to ensure there is no residual damage or risk of infection.

9. Adapt to the Situation:

  • Keep in mind that the Heimlich maneuver may require adjustments based on the age and condition of the choking person. For instance, the force used on an adult may need to be modified for a child or pregnant individual.

10. Be Prepared and Stay Calm:

Conclusion: Empower Yourself to Save Lives

The Heimlich maneuver is a valuable skill that can empower you to save lives in choking emergencies. Whether you follow the traditional method or opt for variations like the "Five-and-Five" approach, being prepared and knowing when and how to act can make a significant difference. Remember, when in doubt or if your attempts are unsuccessful, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately for professional assistance.
