How to Find an AED in a Public Place—Fast

When someone collapses at a gym, airport or school, the AED may be close—but “close” is not useful if nobody knows which hallway to take.
Do not leave the person alone to search. Call 911, begin CPR and send a specific bystander to find the AED. The fastest search usually starts with a staff member, security desk or reception area, not a phone app.
What to say when you send someone for an AED
Point to one person and give a complete assignment:
“You in the green jacket—bring the nearest AED and come straight back. Ask security if you do not see one.”
A direct assignment prevents the bystander effect. Ask the person to repeat the task back. Meanwhile, another helper can call 911 on speaker and the nearest capable responder can begin CPR.
Where AEDs are commonly located
Look for a wall cabinet and a sign showing the letters “AED,” often paired with a heart and lightning-bolt symbol. Common placement areas include:
- Reception, information and security desks.
- Main entrances, elevator banks and central corridors.
- Gymnasiums, fitness floors, pools and athletic offices.
- School main offices, cafeterias and sports facilities.
- Airport gates, transit stations and large event venues.
- Employee break rooms and first-aid stations.
- Near fire extinguishers or other emergency equipment.
Placement varies. An AED may be behind a staffed desk to reduce theft, inside an alarmed cabinet or mounted near a high-traffic route. If you do not immediately see the sign, ask an employee: “Where is your AED?” That wording is faster than asking generally for first aid.
If you are the only person there
Call 911 and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Put the phone on speaker. The dispatcher can help you decide how to balance CPR with retrieving a nearby AED based on the setting and circumstances.
Do not spend several minutes wandering through an unfamiliar building. CPR and emergency activation should not be abandoned for an uncertain search.
Can an AED locator app help?
Some communities, dispatch centers and private apps maintain AED registries. They can be useful for planning, but coverage and update frequency vary. A cabinet may have moved, a building may be locked or the device may be temporarily out of service.
Use a registry before an emergency to learn the landscape. During a cardiac arrest, prioritize 911, CPR and on-site staff who know the building.
Once the AED arrives
Turn it on and follow its spoken and visual prompts. The device will show where to place the pads on the person’s bare chest and will analyze the heart rhythm. It will advise a shock only when one is appropriate.
- Continue CPR while the AED is being prepared whenever the device permits.
- Make sure nobody is touching the person during rhythm analysis.
- If a shock is advised, loudly say “Clear,” look from head to feet and deliver the shock as directed.
- Resume CPR immediately when the AED tells you to do so.

Make the AED visible before anyone needs it
If you manage a workplace, studio, daycare, church or community facility, walk the route from the busiest areas to the AED. Ask someone unfamiliar with the building to find it without hints. Their hesitation will reveal missing signs and confusing access points.
A useful AED readiness check includes:
- Clear directional signs from multiple approaches.
- Access during every hour the facility is occupied.
- A cabinet that is not blocked by furniture or displays.
- Routine checks of the status indicator, pads and battery.
- Staff who can state the location without looking it up.
- An emergency plan that includes who calls 911, who begins CPR and who retrieves the AED.
OSHA notes that public-access defibrillation programs can reduce response time and provides resources for workplace AED programs. Exact requirements vary by location and organization.
Build the habit: look up and ask
The next time you enter a gym, school, airport or office, look up for an AED sign. Ask where the device is if you cannot find it. Ten seconds of curiosity now can save confusion later.

AED signs are designed to be seen, but not always from every direction
The cabinet may be around a corner even when the sign is overhead. Look above eye level at corridor intersections, near elevators and at entrances to large rooms. In a crowded venue, ask a staff member to point to the exact cabinet rather than giving general directions.
Some cabinets sound an alarm when opened. That alarm is intended to draw attention; it is not a reason to leave the AED inside during a suspected cardiac arrest.
Common barriers that make a nearby AED effectively far away
- The device is inside an office that is locked after business hours.
- A freestanding sign has been moved behind a display.
- Staff know the AED exists but call it by another name.
- A large campus has several buildings but only one location map.
- The cabinet is accessible, but the fastest door requires a badge.
- The AED has been moved for an event and not returned.
A good emergency plan tests access during evenings, weekends and special events—not only during the manager’s normal shift.
How far away should an AED be?
There is no single placement distance that fits every building. Response planning usually works backward from time: can a person recognize the arrest, call for the device, reach it, return and apply the pads quickly? Stairs, crowds, locked doors and the size of the facility all affect the answer.
OSHA notes that public-access defibrillation programs can reduce response time to roughly three to five minutes. Organizations should use a site-specific assessment and applicable local requirements when deciding how many AEDs they need and where to place them.
Special locations deserve a specific search plan
Schools
Check the main office, gym and athletic facilities. Outdoor fields may be far from the building, so the emergency action plan should identify the closest device during games and practices.
Gyms and studios
Ask the front desk. A device may be placed near the fitness floor, locker rooms or pool entrance. Staff changes can create knowledge gaps, so location review should be part of onboarding.
Airports and transit centers
Look along concourses, near gates, security posts and information desks. Give the runner a direction and landmark; “go find one” can waste time in a large terminal.
Workplaces
Check security, reception, break areas and first-aid stations. Remote floors, warehouses and parking facilities may need their own coverage.

Questions about finding and using public AEDs
Can an untrained person use an AED?
AEDs provide step-by-step prompts and analyze the rhythm themselves. Call 911 and follow the device and dispatcher. Training can make the sequence more familiar and reduce hesitation.
What if the AED says “no shock advised”?
Resume CPR immediately when prompted. “No shock” does not mean the person no longer needs help; it means the device did not detect a rhythm it is designed to shock at that moment.
What if the person has a pacemaker?

What if the person is wet?
Move them away from standing water if it is safe and quickly dry the chest so the pads adhere. Do not delay the 911 call or CPR while searching for a perfectly dry location.
Connect the AED plan to team roles
