CPR: A Critical Skill Set for Everyone

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a skill that everyone should know and be capable of doing. CPR can be a life-saving investment in yourself for your loved ones. Imagine how you would handle a loved one having a cardiac incident and you were there, able to help, but didn’t have the knowledge, skills, or capability to help? How would you handle the result of the incident? Could you change it? Yes, you can make a difference by attending a CPR class in person or online and obtain certification thus giving you the knowledge, skills, and ability to give a victim the best possible outcome when experiencing a cardiac event.

So what does CPR actually consist of? CPR is a coordinated effort of a series of skills, such as chest compressions, rescue breaths, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) usage regardless if the victim is an adult, child, or infant.  Chest compressions consist of a compressing motion that involves the rescuers hands to be placed on the chest of the victim and forcefully contracting the chest to pump the blood for the heart within the body. Rescue breathing is the artificial ventilating process to oxygenate the blood within the body. The AED is used to send an electrical wave through the heart in an effort to have the heart start pumping again on its own.  CPR may vary from situation to situation. An example would be that the compression ratio in an adult victim is always 30 compressions to 2 breaths, in contrast to an infant victim in which the ratio is 15 compressions to 2 breaths, or 30 compressions to 2 breaths depending on the number of rescuers. As one could imagine, there is a lot that goes into effectively coordinating a CPR scenario.

CPR is not challenging or difficult.  It is a learned process of knowledge, skills, and abilities that can be achieved by anyone who is willing and able to learn them.  CPR is a life saving process that could help you one day save a loved one in a cardiac event.
