CPR + First Aid Certification Manual: Recognition & Protective Gear

First Aid Recognition & Protective Gear
RECOGNIZING THE NEED FOR FIRST AID AND PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

The most important action is to recognize an incident and determining the need for additional help. If bodily fluids are present, then ensure, at minimum, that protective gloves are worn prior to assisting. Including personal protective equipment such as disposable gloves, CPR breathing barriers, and eye protection in an aid kit can prevent disease transmission when giving care. If you have recognized a situation that you believe requires first aid, it is important that you obtain consent prior to rendering assistance. Wearing adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) that will keep you safe while assisting is essential to your safety.

RECOGNITION OF A MEDICAL EMERGENCY

It is important to notify emergency trained individuals, such as firefighters and paramedics as soon as possible. Recognizing the signs of a medical emergency can be crucial in saving lives. The universal notification number in the United States is 9-1-1.
